Hello Voltage Student,

We spend a lot of time trying to live up to the expectations of others. We desire to be known and loved for who we really are, but we fight this temptation to try to change ourselves to become what other people want us to be. We crave acceptance and approval so much that we try to mold ourselves into what we think other people want us to be. But that is not what God wants for us.

God created us with our unique personalities, talents, and interests for a specific purpose. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Some translations say “masterpiece.” Think of that! You are God’s masterpiece! Not only that, but you were created for good works which God planned before hand for you to do. When He created you, when he designed you, and gave you all of your talents and passion and abilities, He already had a plan for your life. He made you exactly as you are because He has a plan for you, a purpose.
In a world that constantly pressures you to change, to fit in, to measure up, God is telling you that you are His masterpiece. That you are already everything you should be. You are enough. He loves you more than you could possibly know. There is nothing you can do or not do that could change how much He loves you. And what does He ask for in return? He wants you to love Him. To simply love Him back. He wants you to stop trying to be someone you are not and be the person He created you to be. You are so incredibly special, and He has such great plans for your life!

We would love to hear from you. Tell us something you learned from this lesson, or just send us a little note to tell us what you have been up to or how we can pray for you.

We miss you all,

Hello Voltage Students,

We miss you all so much, and we wish we could all be together today. Sadly, we cannot. We didn’t want you to miss youth group completely, so we decided to move it online. Not the same, we know, but hopefully we can still have fun and learn a couple things along the way.

Here’s how it will work:

  2. Play along with the “Who Am I? game. Did you do better than Ethan?
  3. Watch your lesson on RightNow Media. (Shattered – Episode 1)
  4. Read lesson notes below and answer the questions. (try to answer in a different color or font so I can easily see your answers) You will need a Bible fo the lesson. If you don’t have one and/or can’t borrow one, you can use google.
  5. Send Samuel & I an email to voltageacc@gmail.com with answers to the questions in the lesson. We would also love to hear what you have been up to and  how we can pray for you. NOTE: It will not be private if you hit reply all. SO double check that the email is ONLY being sent to voltageacc@gmail.com.
  6. I will send out a reward to everyone who emails and reply with the questions answered. If you have more than one student in your house, just send me two different replies.

Shattered Episode 1 Lesson – March 29, 2020
Lesson Notes and Questions (Don’t forget to email your answers to voltageacc@gmail.com
  1. What did you think about that trick? Crazy right?
In the video, he was talking about feelings and trusting our feelings. While trusting the “feelings” of the girl in the video worked for his trick (spoiler alert – he wasn’t relying solely on her “feelings”), feelings can sometimes get us into trouble.
  1. Have you ever made a choice you regret? If you really think about it, can you see how your feelings led you to make that choice?

Feelings matter, but we have to remember that things are not always as they seem. Feelings need to be tempered with truth.

What does that mean? Well, think of it like this. Imagine a little kid who thinks he is a superhero; he has the mask, the cape, everything he needs to save the world. He feels like a superhero and as such, he feels like he should be able to fly. Does that mean he can he fly? If he jumps off the roof, will his feelings help him fly or will the truth of gravity bring him down to earth? Exactly. Gravity will win. Truth is truth, no matter what we feel.

Now I doubt any of you feel like you can fly, but you may feel like this one choice won’t really hurt you. Sure, people have told you aren’t supposed to it, but it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal. You might think they are being overprotective or that they just don’t understand. I mean, it feels like a good idea, so what could really go wrong? But just like that little superhero, our feelings don’t stop truth. Truth always catches up with us.

God has put people in our lives to show us truth. People like your parents, teachers, and even Mr. Samuel and me. But more importantly God gave us truth in His word.
  1. Read John 17:17 & 2 Timothy 3:16 What do these verses tell us about where we find truth?
  1. How does knowing God gave us ways of finding truth change how we should make decisions?

Hint: Read Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 3:5-6, & James 1:5

God knows that we are easily deceived. He knows that we are easily distracted by the problems around us. He knew we would likely focus on the wrong things, so he told us:

So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 The Message (MSG)

  1. So, what does that mean? What are we supposed to focus on?

We need to focus on eternity. You may be thinking, “I don’t even know what that means.”

Let’s make it practical. When you are faced with a choice, you naturally focus on what the consequences will be right now. If I say “no,” will they still like me? If I do this and I get caught, will I be grounded for a week or for a month? (Y’all, it is natural to weigh the cost.) Will this really hurt me?

BUT God tells us we are considering the wrong things. Instead of making choices based on right now and how it will affect us, we need to see bigger. What if we asked questions like this? Would God want me to do this? Would I want to God to know I did this? (spoiler: He will know) Will doing this show others that I love God? If people knew about this choice, would it help me share God’s love with them?

When we think bigger than ourselves, and think beyond today, we will make choices that help us grow closer to God. We will make choices that will enable to share God’s love with others. Catch this: In 10 years, 20 years, 100 years, it won’t matter how much “fun” we had or how popular we were. What will matter is if other’s saw Jesus in us. If our choices help someone come to know Jesus, that will matter for eternity! Like Paul told the Corinthians, we need to change our focus. We need to stop worrying about things that won’t last anyway and focus on eternity!
  1. So next time you are faced with a choice, will you rely on your feelings or truth? Where will you find truth? Will you focus on the consequences now or focus on eternity? How will that affect your choice?

Something to Think About:

In the video, Harris talked about how he felt about God, and how when he was a teen, he felt like God didn’t care about him. Have you ever wondered if there is a God? Or if He really cares about you? If you have, will you do me a favor? Will you just answer this question in your email? I would love to help you find truth. I want every one of you to know, without a doubt, that there is a God, and that God loves you more than you could even comprehend. I won’t be sharing these emails with anyone, so feel free to share honestly.
